For athletes around the globe and their fans the 2009 Berlin World Championships in Athletics will be the highlight of the year. The whole world will be watching as the German capital plays host to the event from August 15 to 23, with its Olympic Stadium in the centre of attention as 2,000 athletes will be competing for titles and medals in 47 competitions.
In the immediate run-up to the 12th World Championships in Athletics, the German organisers are inviting 38 participating national athletics associations to Germany to extensive high profile international preparatory training camps.
In the Caribbean, athletics organisations from Trinidad and Tobago as well as from Anguilla, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines are invited. All costs for the entire programme and stay will be borne by the German side. The Trinidad and Tobago team will be preparing for the World Championships in the city of Erfurt in Thuringia.
And the teams of the other three Caribbean islands will be participating in training camps in Nürtingen in the south-west of Germany.
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall almost 20 years ago, the two parts of the formerly divided city have been united and have grown together. This has made Berlin one of the world’s most exciting cities, with a fascinating international arts and culture scene.
Berlin attracts increasing numbers of young and creative people from all over the world, and with hotels and restaurants to suit every taste and budget, it can ensure that visitors always enjoy their stay.
The participation of the Soca Warriors in the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany proved to be a most memorable experience both for the brave Trinidad and Tobago team as well as for their many Trinidadian and German fans.
The participation of Trinidad and Tobago as well as the other Caribbean athletics teams first in the high powered training camps in Erfurt and Nürtingen and later in the 12th World Championships in Athletics in Berlin will be an event of similar importance.
