Abraham, German clash in Newsday 30-lap grind

THE NEWSDAY-sponsored Republic Day Cycle Classic and 5K Run and Walk will have an international flavour today.
It will also present an opportunity for local road champion Emile Abraham to renew rivalry with Stefan Steinweg of Germany in the feature 30-lap event.
This will get underway soon after the run and walk from 3 pm at King George V Park, St Clair.
Yesterday Abraham, who returned home from the USA on Monday, said his strategy is to prevent any of the main riders from opening up a sizeable lead in the race.
He is expected to be supported by his teammates from “Team Type 1” — Daniel Holt and Heath Blackgrove — both of whom are from the US.
The Tobago-born cyclist is returning from a two-year hiatus from the Newsday sponsored event since an accident sidelined him the last time around.
His return and clash with Steinweg will help prepare him for the Tobago International Cycle Classic which pedals off tomorrow and ends on Sunday in the sister-isle of Tobago.
However Steinweg will have a point to prove today ahead of him defending his Tobago International Cycle Classic crown.
He told Newsday yesterday that he will be retiring after the Tobago race but fancies his chances in today’s circuit grind.
He said the Newsday sponsored race is shorter than the Beacon West Indies vs The World Cycle race staged around the Queen’s Park Savannah which he has also won in the past.
“Abraham and I are two different type of riders. He is a road race cyclist that likes long distances but I prefer the shorter distances as most of our races in Germany are like that, about 80 kilometres,” Steinweg said.
He said he did not have a clear plans for today’s race.
